About Maasai Mara

Embark on an Adventure in Maasai Mara National Park

The Maasai Mara, also known simply as the Mara, is a renowned wildlife reserve located in southwestern Kenya, forming part of the larger Mara-Serengeti ecosystem. This vast expanse of land, covering approximately 1,510 square kilometers, is named after the Maasai people, the indigenous inhabitants of the region, and the Mara River that runs through it.

WILDLIFE SIGHTINGS

The reserve is home to a diverse range of wildlife, including the “Big Five” (lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard, and rhinoceros). Other species found in the Maasai Mara include cheetahs, hyenas, giraffes, hippos, crocodiles, various antelope species, and numerous bird species. The abundance of wildlife ensures excellent game viewing throughout the year.

SAFARI EXPERIENCES

Game Drives

Open 4×4 safari vehicles are the most popular means of experiencing the wonders of the Masai Mara National Reserve, many lodges offering this experience in the early morning and late afternoon. Some game drives will be conducted in closed 4×4 vehicles with a pop-up roof, operated by local safari ground operators. There is the option to spend a full day in the reserve, a picnic lunch packed to be enjoyed in a quiet location out on the plains of the reserve.

Guided Walking Safaris

While walking safaris or bush and trail walks are not permitted within the main Masai Mara National Reserve, there is the option to enjoy a walk of around one to two hours with a Masai guide or professional safari guide in one of the conservancies or smaller private reserves within and around the greater Masai Mara National Park.

POINT OF INTEREST

The Great Migration

The Maasai Mara is perhaps best known for hosting the Great Migration, one of the most incredible wildlife spectacles on the planet. This annual migration sees millions of wildebeest, zebras, and other herbivores moving between the Maasai Mara in Kenya and the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania in search of fresh grazing land. The Mara River crossing during the migration is a particularly dramatic and thrilling event.

Balloon Safaris

The Maasai Mara is a popular destination for hot air balloon safaris, providing a unique and breathtaking perspective of the landscape and wildlife. Balloon safaris typically take place during the early morning hours, offering a serene and panoramic view of the plains and wildlife below.

Immersive Maasai Culture

The Maasai people, known for their distinctive red attire and intricate beadwork, inhabit the areas surrounding the reserve. Many lodges and camps in the Maasai Mara offer cultural experiences, allowing visitors to interact with the Maasai, learn about their traditional customs, and witness traditional dances.

Mara Triangle

The Maasai Mara is divided into three sectors, and the Mara Triangle is one of them. This area is known for its scenic landscapes and abundant wildlife. It is managed by the Mara Conservancy, which focuses on conservation efforts and sustainable tourism practices.

Oloololo Escarpment

The western border of the Maasai Mara is marked by the Oloololo Escarpment, offering stunning views of the reserve below. Some lodges and camps are situated along the escarpment, providing a picturesque setting for visitors.
