Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, located in southwestern Uganda, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its dense, ancient rainforest. Covering an area of approximately 331 square kilometers, the park is renowned for its biodiversity and, most notably, as a habitat for the endangered mountain gorillas. Established in 1991, Bwindi is one of the few places in the world where visitors can trek to see these magnificent primates in their natural habitat.
Wildlife Sightings
The park is globally recognized for its population of mountain gorillas, and it is estimated that almost half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas reside here. In addition to gorillas, Bwindi is home to various other primate species, including chimpanzees and various monkeys. The park also boasts a rich avian population, with over 350 bird species, making it a paradise for birdwatchers.
HOW TO GET THERE
By Road
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is accessible by road from major towns and cities in Uganda. The journey time can vary depending on the entry point, but it typically takes several hours. Roads leading to the park may be challenging, especially during the rainy season.
By Air
The nearest airstrip is Kihihi, and charter flights can be arranged to this airstrip from Entebbe International Airport or other regional airports. From Kihihi, visitors can then transfer by road to the park.
By Train
Rail travel is not a practical option for reaching Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, as there is no direct railway connection to the park.

Gorilla Trekking
The highlight of Bwindi is undoubtedly gorilla trekking. Visitors can embark on guided treks to observe and interact with habituated mountain gorilla groups in their natural habitat.

Bwindi is a haven for birdwatchers, with an abundance of bird species, including Albertine Rift endemics. Birding enthusiasts can spot species like the African green broadbill, Grauer’s rush warbler, and the handsome francolin.
